Honest answers to the questions buyers actually ask.
Does Vigo have high-speed trains to Madrid?+
Vigo has AVE service to Madrid, and that is the accurate way to put it. Every Vigo to Madrid service became AVE, on S-106 trains, from 9 June 2025, running over the Olmedo-Zamora-Galicia high-speed line and reaching Vigo via Ourense and the Eje Atlantico. Vigo is not itself on a dedicated high-speed line to Madrid. The Eje Atlantico runs from A Coruna through Santiago, Vilagarcia and Pontevedra to Vigo-Urzaiz, and is Iberian gauge laid for a possible later conversion. Adif Alta Velocidad's own site could not be read, so that gauge detail rests on secondary sources.
Is Vigo as wet as Galicia's reputation suggests?+
Yes, and that is only half the record. AEMET's normals for station 1495, Vigo Aeropuerto, printed municipality Redondela, period 1981 to 2010, give 1791 mm of rain a year across 129.2 days of a millimetre or more, 107.4 foggy days and 15.3 days with a storm. The same annual row gives 2269 hours of sunshine, 88.9 cloudless days and only 3.8 days of frost. Wet does not mean dull here. We hold only the annual row for this station, not the twelve monthly rows, so we cannot tell you how the rain falls across the year.
Which population figure should I use for Vigo?+
Name the operation, because there are three near 295,000 and none converts to another. INE's Censo Anual de Poblacion gives 295,735 at 1 January 2025, and this page uses that one. INE's padron count of official population figures gives 294,489 at the same date, confirmed independently by the Instituto Galego de Estatistica. IGE also publishes a population load for Vigo at the second quarter of 2024, within which residents are 296,070. Different operations, different dates. Never divide a count taken from one by a total taken from another.
How many foreign residents does Vigo have?+
It depends which question you mean, and INE publishes both totals itself for 1 January 2025. On nationality, 22,550 residents held a foreign passport. On country of birth, 44,403 were born outside Spain, close to twice as many. Naturalisation explains much of that gap. The five largest birthplace groups are Venezuela, Colombia, Argentina, Brasil and Peru; the five largest by nationality are Venezuela, Colombia, Peru, Portugal and Brasil. Those five are the largest, not the whole set of origins. IGE publishes its own foreign total for Vigo, but at 2022, so we do not use it here.
Where do the origin rankings come from, and are they INE's?+
The two totals above come from INE tables that publish an explicit foreign category, so those are INE's own published figures. The country lists come from a different pair of tables, covering capitals and principal cities, which publish country rows and no foreign aggregate at all. So the ranking is INE's data, but any foreign total assembled from those country rows would be ours by subtraction rather than something INE reports. We keep the two apart on purpose, because the correct source line differs between them on this one page.
What do the July 2026 asking prices say about Vigo?+
Every figure is an asking price rather than a sale price: Idealista's own methodology states that the index reflects the offer price, not the final transaction price. In the July 2026 report Vigo sits above the Pontevedra province figure and below the highest level Idealista prints for the city in this series, which is dated December 2008. Seven districts carry a price and four more, Bembrive, Candean - Cabral, Navia and Teis, are listed without one. Take the district figures from the municipality table, which is what we have done.
Which hospital covers Vigo?+
We do not name one, and the reason is worth stating. SERGAS places the city in the Area Sanitaria de Vigo, but the organisational page we read names no hospitals at all, and the area's own portal describes Hospital Alvaro Cunqueiro as caring for more than 600,000 people in the city and its area of influence without ever using the term reference hospital. Naming it as the reference hospital would be our inference, and an inference is not a source. Vigo is not the only large Spanish city where that designation is unsettled.
Where is Vigo airport, and how busy is it?+
Peinador's land is split across three municipalities, Vigo, Mos and Redondela, with Redondela holding the largest share of the runway and Vigo a narrow strip in the middle of it; the passenger terminal is on the Vigo side. That split comes from press reporting, corroborated by AEMET recording the airport weather station under Redondela. Press reporting of 13 January 2026 gives 1,114,810 passengers and 12,511 aircraft movements for full-year 2025. We found no Aena release for that year, so treat the figure as unverified against the operator.
What are the costs of buying property in Vigo?+
When buying property in Vigo, budget for property transfer tax (ITP) of 8%, plus roughly 3-4% in notary, land registry and legal fees. Agency commission is usually paid by the seller. On the mainland and the Balearics, new builds pay VAT (IVA) of 10% plus AJD stamp duty instead of ITP. Transfer tax is set by Galicia rather than nationally, and reduced rates can apply for main homes and younger buyers.
What are the ongoing costs of owning property in Vigo?+
Annual property ownership costs in Vigo include IBI (property tax) of 0.4-1.1% of cadastral value, community fees (for apartments), rubbish collection tax (basura), utility bills, and property insurance. Budget approximately 2-4% of property value per year for all running costs. IBI is set by the town hall of Vigo within a national band, so it is municipal rather than regional.
What taxes do I pay when selling property in Vigo?+
When selling property in Vigo, you pay capital gains tax (plusvalía) on the profit at rates of 19-26% depending on the gain amount. Non-residents have 3% of the sale price withheld at completion. You may also pay municipal capital gains tax. Main residence exemptions may apply for residents over 65. Capital gains tax is national, so it is the same in Galicia as anywhere in Spain. Plusvalia municipal is set by the town hall of Vigo and has had two calculation methods since the 2021 reform, so ask your lawyer which one is cheaper for you.
Can I still get a Golden Visa by buying property in Spain?+
No. Spain withdrew the Golden Visa property investment route in April 2025, so buying in Vigo no longer leads to residency. Non-EU buyers who want to live in Spain apply for a separate permit instead, most often the non-lucrative visa (proof of income and private health insurance) or the digital nomad visa (remote work for non-Spanish clients). Ask an immigration lawyer which route fits your situation before you buy.
Transfer tax rates as of August 2026. Rates are set per autonomous community and do change. Confirm the current figures with a Spanish lawyer or tax adviser before you budget.
